5 TOP TIPS FOR RELAXATION

Updated: Dec 10, 2022

START BY MAKING TIME FOR YOURSELF

With the demands of the modern lifestyles, finding quality time for yourself can be very difficult. However, it’s very important for every individual to remember the importance of self-care and fulfilling the requirements of our minds to function effectively. Remember – putting time aside for yourself is not being selfish, it’s simply looking after yourself and your mental health.

1. BREATH

Performing breathing exercises is one of the simplest relaxation strategies because these can be done anywhere and at any time. This method of relaxation is effective because it can successfully relieve stress from the body and mind.

To do this effectively, please find a quiet and sit down comfortably. Place your preferred hand on your stomach and close your eyes whilst you perform this exercise. Think of a peaceful open environment that you like, such as the sea, and imagine the sound of nature (water waves, birds chirping etc). Take 3 slow deep breathes and hold for 3 seconds before breathing out. Feel your stomach rise and fall as you inhale and exhale. Repeat this a few times until you feel relaxed.

2. TAKE A BREAK & CONNECT TO NATURE

Nature has a positive impact on our well-being. It is proven that spending time in nature can lower stress hormone levels, blood pressure, anxiety and improve mood whilst also enhancing the immune system. With this technique, you don’t necessary have to be in nature, it can be just as easy as watching videos, looking at pictures and listening to sounds of nature.

3. STRETCH & MEDITATE

Mental stress can result in physical stress or fatigue, and vice versa. Releasing physical tension can also reduce tension within the mind, helping you to think clearly. To do this: firstly, put together a playlist of your favourite calm songs that help you to relax and find a quiet space. Contract each body part, then slowly relax your muscles. As you do this, notice how the sensations in your body change. Many people start either with the muscles in their face or those their toes, and then work their way through the muscles across their bodies to the opposite end.

4. EXPLORE YOUR CREATIVITY

Being creative is an enjoyable experience, and it can also help you to feel more relaxed and calmer.

You can explore your creative side by trying activities such as painting, drawing, dancing, baking, playing an instrument or anything that you enjoy. When using this technique, just focus on enjoying yourself rather than worrying too much about the finished product.

5. WHAT ARE YOU GRATEFUL FOR?

Making a list of things you are grateful for, can help with relaxation. Experts say that when we're stressed, we tend to focus more on the negative aspects of our lives than on the positive ones. Thinking about the positive aspects of life and writing them down can help you relax. Think of five good things that happened to you this week and write them down. It doesn't matter if it's something as simple as showing up on time or having a nice lunch.
